Chios Festival – Exhibition of Kalliopi Lemou: “The Endless Sea Hidden and Open”

THE Calliope Lemou (b. 1951, Oinousses, Chios) lives and works in London. He is a sculptor, painter, creates large-scale installations and films. He studied painting and printmaking at the Byam Shaw School of Art, where he also completed a postgraduate course in painting.

Kalliopi Lemou has exhibited widely in various international cultural venues. His trilogy exhibition “Intersections” is a work dedicated to forced migration. The artist collected from the shores of the Greek islands and presented the original wooden boats used to transport immigrants. The project took place at Eleusis in Istanbul (2006) (2007) and in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin (2009) as part of the celebration of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Some of his best known works include the tripartite Navigation in the Dark (2011) at the Benaki Museum in Athens, the Ibrahim Khan Mosque, Rethymno and the privacy of St. Pancras Church, the installation Pledges as part of the 3rd London Biennale. Çanakkale, Turkey (2012), a public sculpture installation Tools of Endearment at Yorkshire Sculpture Park and London, UK, Westersingel in Rotterdam, Netherlands and Boissy-le Chatel, France. In 2015, his project Lemon «At the center of the world» won the award Borusan Contemporary Art Collection Award.
