Democracy in the National Gallery

The President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, opened a new, topical exhibition called DEMOCRACY at the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum.

President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou A new, current exhibition titled DEMOCRACY, tracing the relationship of art to political history in Southern Europe, has opened (through 2/2/25) at the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum.

This is the first major international exhibition to address the relationship between art and democracy in one of the most defining periods of Southern European history, when three countries, Greece, Portugal and Spain, transitioned from totalitarian regimes to democracy.

The National Gallery takes a look at the current socio-political situation in the world, with the aim of highlighting how it can be linked to the strife and riots that prevailed in Southern Europe in the 1960s and 1970s.

The DEMOCRACY exhibition is a collective project involving 55 artists and groups of artists. It includes 140 visual works from Greece, Spain and Portugal, as well as posters, video projections, performances. A film screening, as well as a conference on democracy and visual arts will be held within the framework of the exhibition.

Alexandros Soutsou National Gallery-Museum cooperates with public and private organizations, collectors and artists in Greece, Spain and Portugal for the implementation of the exhibition and the DEMOCRATIC Public Program.
